From Water Feature Disaster to a Hill Country Dream
When Vicki and Jeff moved into their New Braunfels home, they envisioned peaceful evenings beside the sound of flowing water — a backyard retreat that matched the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
What they got instead was something entirely different.
The original water feature leaked constantly, failed to circulate properly, and was a complete eyesore. What was promised as a beautiful waterfall system ended up being, in Vicki’s words, “basically three ponds that collected frogs, tadpoles, and mosquitoes.”
Even worse, it never looked natural or integrated into the landscape around it.
That’s when they began searching for a company that could completely reimagine the space.
Searching for the Right Water Feature Rebuild Company
Like many homeowners in the Austin and New Braunfels area, Vicki started with a Google search for local pond and waterfall contractors.
After reviewing galleries and speaking with several companies, one thing stood out to her about Stonebridge:
“The pondless water features that they had done looked like they were naturally there to begin with — not artificial, not man-made.”
That natural aesthetic was especially important because Vicki and Jeff had intentionally designed their home to feel like a Colorado mountain retreat nestled into the Hill Country landscape.
The backyard water feature needed to complement that vision — not fight against it.
When our team visited the property and inspected the existing installation, we immediately understood their frustration.
In fact, it was one of the worst failed water feature builds we had ever encountered.
But underneath the problems was incredible potential.
Designing a Natural Hill Country Waterfall
The goal of this rebuild wasn’t simply to “fix” the old system.
It was to completely transform the experience of the backyard.
Vicki and Jeff wanted:
- A natural-looking stream
- The sound and movement of real running water
- A feature that blended into the surrounding landscape
- A functional bridge leading to the garden
- A comfortable place to sit and enjoy the water every day
Together, we designed a custom pondless waterfall system that feels like it has always belonged on the property.
Massive machine-set boulders — including several stones weighing over 1,000 pounds — were carefully positioned to create a dramatic split waterfall effect while maintaining a natural appearance.
The finished feature includes:
- A 600-gallon underground reservoir basin
- A 5,000 GPH pump system
- Split cascading waterfalls
- A custom stone bridge
- A mortared patio seating area
- Integrated Hill Country-style landscaping
Reusing Existing Stone to Enhance the Landscape
One of the most rewarding parts of this project was finding ways to reuse materials from the failed water feature instead of simply hauling everything away.
As we removed the old construction, we salvaged many of the original rocks and repurposed them into additional landscaping throughout the yard.
The reclaimed stone was used to create another tier in Vicki’s garden, helping tie the entire property together naturally.
Instead of waste, the old materials became part of the transformation.
A Custom Stone Bridge with a Purpose
One of the most unique features of this project is the custom stone bridge crossing the stream.
For Vicki, this wasn’t just decorative — it created a functional pathway into her garden while adding the feeling of an authentic mountain retreat.
The bridge naturally draws you into the landscape and changes how the backyard is experienced.
Combined with the mortared patio seating area nearby, the entire space became somewhere to slow down, relax, and connect with nature.
From Frustration to Favorite Place in the Backyard
Today, the transformation is hard to believe.
Instead of avoiding the area, Vicki and Jeff now spend evenings relaxing on the custom mortared patio we built directly into the water feature, listening to the trickling waterfalls after long days at work. What was once a frustrating backyard disaster has become one of their favorite places to unwind and enjoy the beauty of their Hill Country home.
“My husband and I, we come over and we sit here after our days at work, and we just marvel at what we have now.”
That reaction is exactly why we love rebuild projects.
Sometimes the most dramatic transformations start with the biggest disasters.

Building Water Features That Belong in the Hill Country
The best water features don’t feel installed.
They feel like they belong.
By combining natural stone placement, thoughtful landscaping, functional gathering spaces, and ecosystem-inspired design, this New Braunfels rebuild became more than a repair project — it became the backyard retreat the homeowners originally dreamed of.
If your existing pond or waterfall is leaking, failing, or simply doesn’t feel natural, a rebuild may completely transform how you experience your outdoor space.
