Is your pond looking a little more like sweet tea than the clear water, backyard oasis of your dreams? Then it’s time for a spring cleaning!

Here in the Austin area and across the Texas Hill Country, spring hits fast—and so does pond cleaning season. As everything wakes back up, your water feature can either thrive…or start to show signs that it needs a little help.

Pond Spring Cleaning in the Austin Area: Why It Matters

A proper pond spring cleaning is one of the most important things you can do to keep your water feature healthy all year long. Whether you have a koi pond, an ecosystem pond, or a pondless waterfall, winter debris, decaying plant matter, and built-up sludge can quickly throw things out of balance.

That “sweet tea” color you’re seeing? It’s often a mix of organic debris and catkins—especially common here in Central Texas.

A clean pond means:

  • Healthier fish

  • Better water clarity

  • Stronger biological filtration

  • A more enjoyable backyard space

Does Your Pond Need a Full Cleaning or Just a Tune-Up?

Not every pond needs a full drain and clean-out—but many do this time of year.

Here’s a simple way to tell:

You likely need a full clean-out if:

  • There’s a thick layer of sludge (“pond muck”) on the bottom

  • The water is dark, murky, or has that tea-like tint

  • You notice strong odors or poor circulation

A light clean or spring start-up may be enough if:

  • The water is still relatively clear

  • Debris is minimal and easy to net out

  • Your system has been well-maintained through winter

If you’re unsure, that’s exactly what we’re here for—we’re happy to chat and recommend the right approach.

What’s Included in a Professional Pond Spring Cleaning?

When we perform a pond spring cleaning, we go far beyond just skimming leaves off the top.

Our deep cleaning service includes:

  • Safely housing your fish during the process

  • Fully draining the pond

  • Removing all organic debris and built-up sludge

  • Trimming and removing plants as needed

  • Flushing and cleaning pumps and biofilters

  • Refilling the pond and adding beneficial bacteria

The goal is to reset your pond’s ecosystem so it can thrive through the warmer months ahead.

Timing Matters in the Texas Hill Country

One of the biggest factors in pond maintenance around here? Oak trees.

If your pond is not under oak trees, we can begin cleanings in early spring.

If your pond is under oaks, we strongly recommend waiting until the pollen drops are finished in April. Otherwise, those falling oak catkins will clog your streams, filters, and add unnecessary debris to your pond – including tannins that turn your pond into that familiar sweet tea color.

Pond Cleaning Costs in the Austin Area

We believe in being upfront about pricing so you know what to expect.

  • Fountain cleanings start at $475

  • Pond cleanings start at $875

Final cost depends on the size of the feature, the amount of debris, and site conditions.

A few important notes:

  • Estimates assume we can dispose of organic debris onsite

  • Additional charges may apply if unexpected conditions extend time on-site

  • While we take every precaution to protect your fish, we cannot guarantee against loss of life

  • We are not liable for any pre-existing or discovered leaks during or after cleaning
